Its been over 2 years since I set out to build a little corner of the internet dedicated to helping musicians use their websites to bolster their online presence. While there have been plenty of diversions along the way, including helping plenty of other non-musicians with various web activities, I feel things are starting to come together with this experiment of mine. So much so that I have decided to give this endeavor a moment of reflection, and to inject some new energy into TNC Design gong forward.

Lessons Learned

Patience is a funny thing. Too much of it can keep the idle engine running longer than it probably should, but not enough patience could send someone walking away from something perfectly viable. For myself, I’ve probably lived in the “too much” camp but that patience has lead me to working with a variety of interesting clients. Sure, I’ve helped some musicians with their sites over this time, but also I’ve developed sites for lawyers, marketing agencies, photographers, heck, even a dog gelato company among others. But because of that work not only did I broaden my knowledge of design and development, but it allowed me to keep the New Classical Design project alive.

The other takeaway? Its ok to not know everything. The world of web design is vast and constantly changing. The second you get a handle on how to use a program is the second they overhaul the interface and change everything on you. New projects take discovery, projects take learning, there are some universal concepts that one picks up on the way but don’t assume there is anything like a “simple job.” But that flexibility is key to the whole process. And if there is one thing I love about this work is to learn how to use a new tool or trick to get around whatever roadblocks otherwise present themselves.

A New Look, a New Site, and a New('ish) name

The New Classical, or The New Classical Design is becoming simply New Classical Design. With this small change will be a new logo, and new look for the website. This should all come down the pipeline within the next month. The reason for this simple change? I had some lofty ambitions for what “The New Classical” could mean or do when I first set out. However, after awhile I realized what was needed in our industry was a more cohesive and clean looking marketing strategy for the field of classical music and the people who perform it. Therefore, I felt that “New Classical Design” better encompasses this focus. I’ll be honest, my main frustration with the marketing efforts up to this point for classical music is that its incredibly convoluted. My goal is to simplify things for those involved. Ok, the name change isn’t really all that interesting, but hopefully you will check back soon to see a newly redesigned newclassicaldesign.com and it will all be worthwhile.

What to expect from New Classical Design 2.0

First and foremost, more artist features! I have several really talented and dynamic individuals and organizations that I have and am working with and can’t wait to spread word about their swanky new websites. When someone approaches me to help them with their website my commitment to them doesn’t stop after I hit the word “publish” on their site.

Second, a return to regular blog posts. I won’t bore you with the reasons my posts haven’t been frequent as of late, but then again some of it is interesting…there’s an event involving a cat named Jack, a box of laundry, and 5 months living in 4 different airbnb’s while juggling a newborn infant…but that’s for another time. However, I hope to bring you not only more artist features but more helpful resources for those of you out there that are trying to carve out your own path in this musical landscape.

And Lastly…a Podcast!

Ok, I’m kidding. No podcast…yet. Well, probably no podcast ever, but who knows…maybe some day? Regardless, it would be cool to host some events from featured artists in some sort of capacity. Anyways, I don’t need to distract myself, I think I’m just going to go publish this blog post before I convince myself of doing anything drastic.
